Button Stud Earrings

Pair of star stud button earrings
A couple of button stud earrings.

These sparkly buttons are from an old vest I used to wear as a teenager. I’m pretty sure the only reason I held onto the vest for so long was because of these sparkly buttons. :) I eventually threw out the vest and kept the buttons waiting for a special project where I could display them properly. And then it came to me this weekend, a pair of stud earrings would be the perfect way to show off these beauties!

Materials List

The following list has all the supplies and tools you'll need to make this project.

Step 1

The hardest part of this tutorial is the first step - getting the cabochon button flat. With your pliers, bend the cabochon button’s loop backwards and forwards until it eventually snaps off. You’ll end up with some jagged edges which may or may not be taller than the button itself. To test this, place the button on a flat surface and see if it lays flat.

Step 2

With your nail file (yep, I used an old nail file I was okay with throwing out for this one), file down the nubs on the back of the cabochon button until it’s flattened out.

Step 3

Using the glue gun, apply generous amounts of glue to the back of the decorative cabochon button so the cavities are all filled up. Place the flat button on top of the glue glob and let it dry.

Step 4

Glue the post back to the flat button and finish your pair of earrings. Since the post backs are small and metal, they’ll heat up really quickly. I recommend holding them with the pliers when gluing them.

Step 5

Repeat Steps 1-4 for the second cabochon button. Now your pair of earrings are finished and ready to wear!
